The impact of Shakespeare on the Bengali stage was most felt. In Bombay & Madras, dramatic activities were not so much prominent as in Calcutta. Modern India theatre started in 1770 in Bombay & Calcutta. Shakespeare was a crucial writer for them. There have been three types of Shakespeare. In the handling of Indian materials in princes "edur & Vasabadutta" the dramatist could not throw off the yoke of Shakespeare. Echoes of Shakespeare are found almost in many Indian dramas. Tragedy in Bengal was modelled in the nineteenth century was built on Shakespeare' Model. Violent action & preponderated. In Girish Ghosh Bengali drama & Rabindranath 's Tagore " Bisarjon, Raja Rani" the strain of Shakespearean tragedy is prominent. Iswar Chandra wrote " Bhrantibilas" which is based on Shakespeare's " Comedy of errors". Kaliasam wrote burden. Bharata's mental conflicts is couched in terms of Hamlet & Karna' s speech in assembly echoes Antony's Oration. Shakesperean dominance in Indian drama spans 200years. Kolkata particularly has seen many productions of Shakespeare's plays during quarter-century celebrations.
